Medical Testing

These are some simple applets to support Classroom Challenge lesson Representing Probabilities: Medical Testing.

You will also need the complete set of print materials for this lesson, which can be found here.

The applets comprise:

• An interactive sample allowing changes to the sample size and numbers of healthy people and false positive results.
• A sliders applet allowing the investigation of changes to the incidence of the disease and the 'false positive' rate.
• Some sample pages for users without Javascript who cannot run the interactive applets.

Thanks to John Larsen for creating these applets for the project.

The resources require a modern web browser with JavasScript enabled.

Option 1: Run online

This requires a live Internet connection.

Option 2: Download

Download the materials as a ".zip" file. The resources still require a web browser with Javascript enabled, but do not rely on an Internet connection.

PC Users Right-click on the .zip file and choose "Extract all". Then open the folder "medical_testing" and double-click on "Start".

Mac users Double-click on the download to unpack it. Then open the folder "medical_testing" and double-click on "Start".

You might want to copy the downloaded files to a memory stick or a school Intranet.
